How to Change a Tire on a Sprinter Van
How to change a tire on a Sprinter van or Winnebago Revel and all about the tools you should have for offroading.
- Tools
- Owl Tire Ladder
- Safe-T-Jack
- ARB Base
- Breaker Bar
- Impact Wrench
- Air Pressure Gauge
- 17mm socket (aftermarket lug nuts)
- 19mm socket (OEM lug nuts)
- Gloves
- Torque wrench
- Loosen Lugs
- Vehicle should still be on the ground, in park, parking brake applied, and other tires are blocked
- Put proper socket onto the breaker bar
- Loosen lugs in any order
- Jack Vehicle
- If using a Safe-T-Jack, add the extensions and cradle
- Place jack base on the ground, battle jack on top, and line up with the axle. You may or may not be able to use the axle cradle depending on how low to the ground the vehicle is.
- NEVER go under a vehicle that is supported by only a jack!
- Raise the jack until you can see air under the tire. You need enough room for the new, inflated tire to go on
- Remove the Wheel and Tire
- Using the impact or a wrench, remove all of the lugs
- Do not put the lug nuts into the sand! Place in a secure place so the threads are not dirtied
- Install the Spare
- The OEM spare is located under the vehicle
- If using the Owl Tire Carrier, remove the handle bracket, lean the tire towards you, and let the tire rotate to the ground
- Verify the hub is clean
- Wiggle the tire underneath the hub, then slightly raise the wheel and tire onto the hub
- Always thread lug nuts on by hand initially to avoid cross threading. Hand tight all lug nuts in a star pattern
- Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern using the impact wrench
- Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts
- Very slowly turn the knob on the bottle jack to lower the vehicle
- Remove base plate and jack
- Torque the lug nuts to 133 ft-lbs in a star pattern
- Remount spare: on the Owl tire carrier, lean the tire against your legs, grab the inside of the wheel with your hands, then swing the bottom of the tire up onto the tire carrier using the leverage of your legs. Push up on the top of the tire to get it over the bolt and tighten the handle as tight as possible.
- Re-check the handle after driving a bit to make sure the deflated tire is secure in the tire carrier
