How to Install a Horn Upgrade

How to install a horn upgrade for your Sprinter van or Winnebago Revel.

1. Grille Removal

  • Locate the Grille Screws: Depending on your Sprinter Van model, you’ll either need to rotate and pull the Mercedes emblem or remove screws holding the grille.
  • Remove the Torx Screws: Using a T20 Torx driver, remove the three screws on the top of the grille.
  • Release Plastic Snaps: Gently pull the grille forward to release six plastic snaps located at the bottom of the grille.
  • Set the Grille Aside: Once the grille is removed, set it aside to access the horn mounting area.

2. Horn Installation Preparation

  • Unbox and Prepare the Horn Kit: The Owl Super Bass horn kit comes with a mounting bracket and two horns (330 Hz and 400 Hz). The specific placement of the horns doesn't matter.
  • Attach Horns to the Bracket:
    • Unscrew the Allen bolts on the bracket.
    • Attach both horns to the bracket and tighten the bolts securely.

3. Wiring the Horns

  • Connect the Wiring Harness: The harness that comes with the kit is plug-and-play, which means no cutting or splicing is needed.
    • Take the harness and plug the shorter wire into the closest horn.
    • For the farther horn, connect the longer wire.
    • Match brown to the top terminal and blue to the bottom terminal on both horns.

4. Mounting the Horn Bracket

  • Remove Existing Bolts: Using the same T20 Torx driver, remove the bolts located where you will mount the horn.
  • Attach the Horn Bracket: Position the horn bracket and secure it using the removed bolts.
  • Tighten the Bolts: Ensure that the bracket is securely fastened, but don’t overtighten.

5. Connecting the Horn Harness

  • Locate the Factory Horn Connector: Disconnect the plug from the factory horn in your Sprinter Van.
  • Connect the New Harness: Plug the new harness from the Owl horn kit into the existing Mercedes factory horn connector.
  • Zip Tie the Wiring: Use zip ties to secure the wiring harness and ensure it’s not dangling or obstructing other parts. Trim the excess from the zip ties.

6. Test the New Horn

  • Test the Super Bass Horn: Before reattaching the grille, test the horn to ensure it works. Compare the sound with the factory horn for reference.

7. Reinstall the Grille

  • Position the Grille: Align the grille back in place.
  • Secure with Screws: Reinstall the three Torx screws at the top of the grille.
  • Snap the Grille into Place: Gently push the grille to snap the plastic tabs back into position.

8. Final Adjustments

  • Double-check Wiring: Ensure all wiring is secured and nothing is loose.
  • Final Test: Test the horn one last time to confirm everything is functioning properly.
