How to Install the Owl B2 Flex for the Sprinter
How to install the Owl B2 Flex rear door carrier on a 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter, driver side and passenger side.
Before You Start
- The B2 Flex fits 2019 and newer Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (VS30) vans, 144" and 170" wheelbase, 2500 and 3500, 2WD and 4x4, including Sprinter-based builds such as the Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland, Thor, Airstream, Tiffin GH1 and Jayco Terrain.
- The carrier mounts to the factory rear door hinges and to one drilled point in each rear door. Drilling is required.
- Check your hinges before you start. Some vans require the Owl hinge swap. If your hinges are not the correct style, stop and contact Owl before drilling anything.
- Work one door at a time. Never remove all of the hinge bolts at once. Leaving the middle bolt in place keeps the door aligned.
- Plan on roughly two to three hours for both doors.
Tools and Supplies
- Metric socket set and ratchet
- Torx bit set
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Drill and bits, including one slightly larger than 3/8"
- Center punch or a long marker
- Rust preventative spray paint (Rustoleum Rust Reformer works well)
- Blue Loctite
- Isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag
Passenger Side Installation
Step 1: Remove the Door Panel
- Use a plastic trim tool or your fingers to pop the interior door panel off, pulling straight out so the clips do not break.
- Set the panel and any hardware aside.
Step 2: Install the Hinge Brackets
- Locate the bolts on the upper and lower door hinges.
- Remove the outer bolts and leave the middle bolt in place so the door stays aligned.
- Place the supplied washers on the new bolts from the B2 Flex hardware kit.
- Slide the billet aluminum bracket over the remaining middle bolt, then start the new bolts by hand. Leave everything loose for now.
- Repeat on the second hinge.
Step 3: Hang the B2 Flex Chassis
- With a second set of hands, lift the B2 Flex chassis into position against the hinge brackets.
- Start the chassis bolts with a washer on each, top and bottom, and leave them loose so the chassis can still move.
- Raise and lower the chassis until it sits square to the door, then snug the bolts without fully tightening them.
Step 4: Mark and Drill the Door
- Set the bushing in its location on the chassis to locate the drill point on the door.
- Mark the center of that point with a punch or a marker.
- Loosen the chassis bolts and swing the chassis clear of the door.
- Drill a small pilot hole on the mark, then step up to a bit slightly larger than 3/8".
Step 5: Seal the Hole
- Wipe the area clean and spray the inside of the drilled hole with rust preventative paint.
- Let it dry before moving on.
Step 6: Install the Door Plate and Bushing
- Clean the door surface with isopropyl alcohol.
- Peel the adhesive backing off the door plate, align it over the drilled hole and press evenly across the whole plate.
- Insert the bushing through the plate and into the hole.
Step 7: Install the Inner Door Bracket
- From inside the door, position the inner door bracket so its slotted hole lines up with the bushing.
- Run the bolt through the bushing into the bracket, then secure it with a washer and nut from the inside.
Step 8: Final Tighten and Test
- Apply blue Loctite and tighten the hinge bracket and chassis bolts. Snug is enough, do not overtighten.
- Confirm the bushing is snug but not crushed.
- Push and pull on the chassis. It should feel solid with no movement.
- Open and close the door and check clearance at the bumper and body.
- Reinstall the interior door panel.
Driver Side Installation
- The driver side follows the same sequence as the passenger side, mirrored.
- Finish the passenger door first and leave it closed while you work the driver door so you can check alignment between the two halves.
- Before final tightening, close both doors and confirm the two halves line up and the latch engages cleanly.
After the Install
- Re-check every bolt after the first 100 miles, then at every oil change.
- Add panels and accessories only after both chassis halves are fully tightened and aligned.
- Do not exceed the rated load for the panel or carrier you are running.
