How to Install the Owl B2 for the Transit
How to install the Owl B2 for the Ford Transit to add extra storage to your van.
Step 1: Remove the Door Panel
- Use a plastic tool or your fingers to pop off the door panel, pulling straight out to avoid breaking the snaps. Set the panel aside.
Step 2: Install the Billet Aluminum Brackets
- Identify the three bolts on the bottom and top hinges of your Ford Transit.
- Remove the top and bottom bolts, leaving the middle bolt intact. This ensures the door remains aligned.
- Take the new bolts provided in the B2 kit and place the smaller washers on them.
- Install the bracket by sliding it over the existing middle bolt on the hinge. Then, install the new bolts loosely, leaving them a little loose for play.
- Repeat this process for the upper hinge.
Step 3: Attach the B2 Carrier
- With the brackets in place, position the B2 Carrier against the brackets.
- Take the 3/8 x 1" bolts from your hardware kit and place one washer on each.
- Insert the bolts into the top and bottom holes of the B2 Carrier into the hinge brackets, leaving them loose for adjustment.
- Ensure the carrier is aligned properly by lifting it up and down as needed.
- Once all bolts are loosely in place, snug them down but do not tighten completely yet.
Step 4: Mark and Drill the Door Hole
- Place the bushing in its location on the B2 Carrier where the door will be drilled.
- Use a drill bit (or a long Sharpie) to mark the exact spot where the hole should be drilled in the door.
- Remove the B2 Carrier by loosening the bolts.
- With the mark in place, use a smaller drill bit to create a pilot hole.
- Enlarge the pilot hole using a larger drill bit slightly larger than 3/8”.
Step 5: Paint the Drilled Hole
- After drilling the hole, take spray paint (Rustoleum rust reformer is recommended) and coat the inside of the drilled hole to prevent rust.
Step 6: Install the Door Plate
- Take the door plate from your kit and peel off the adhesive backing.
- Carefully align the door plate over the drilled hole.
- Apply pressure evenly to make sure the adhesive sticks well.
Step 7: Reinstall the B2 Carrier
- Reposition the B2 Carrier onto the door.
- Use Loctite (if available) on the bolts to ensure a firm hold.
- Tighten the four 3/8 x 1" bolts snugly but avoid overtightening.
Step 8: Install the Bushing and Inner Door Bracket
- Insert the bushing into the hole you drilled earlier.
- Inside the door, take the inner door bracket and position it so that the slotted hole lines up with the bushing hole.
- Insert the bolt through the bushing and into the bracket.
- Use a washer and nut to secure the bracket to the bolt from the inside.
Step 9: Final Tightening
- Ensure that all bolts (both inside and outside) are snug but not overtightened.
- Test the B2 Carrier for stability by pressing on it. It should be rock-solid, with no movement.
- Check the bushing to ensure it is snug but not overly compressed.
Step 10: Optional - Trim the Bumper (if Necessary)
- If the bumper impinges on the carrier, heat up the plastic bumper using a heat gun.
- Trim the area that is interfering with the hinge and carrier.
- Clean up any edges, making sure the door closes smoothly without obstruction.
