How to Install the Owl Cab Step for the Winnebago Ekko

 

  • Prep and Collect Tools
    • Rivnut tool with 1/4" tip
    • 23/64" drill bit for Rivnuts
    • 1/4" drill bit for pinch weld holes
    • 7/16" wrench
    • 9/16" wrench
    • 7/32" allen
    • 3/16" allen
    • 5/32" allen
    • Spray paint/rust inhibitor for drilled holes
  • Remove/cut-off old steps
  • Align new Step
    • Rear frame to new bracket: 2-3/4"
    • Front frame mount to new bracket: 4-3/4"
    • Front of the bracket goes on the outside of the pinch weld
    • Mark pinch weld holes
  • Rough Mount Bracket
    • After mounts are marked, drill pilot holes
    • Then, drill with the 1/4" bit
    • Test fit 1/4-20 bolts
    • Mount bracket using only the bolts
    • On the backside of the frame, identify the bracket holes on the frame. Mark holes with a punch or marker.
    • Spray paint holes in pinch weld
  • Rivnut Installation
    • Identify the marked bracket holes on the backside of the frame. 
    • Use the 1/4" pit to create the rivnut pilot hole
    • ONLY DRILL through the inner frame
    • Use the 23/64" bit to enlarge the holes
    • Paint the holes
    • Once dry, install Rivnuts using the Rivnut tool:crimp, tighten, repeat
    • Verify the Rivnuts to not spin using a mounting bolt
  • Install the Bracket
    • Loosely mount the plate using the pinch weld bolts. Loosely attach a bolt on the backside
    • Align the backside of the bracket with the Rivnut holes and thread in the bolts with washers
    • Now, tighten the pitch weld bolts
    • Finally, tighten the bolts into the Rivnuts. Do not overtighten!
    • Attach the step bracket and tighten
  • Install the Support Arm Bracket
    • Align bracket and identify mounting point on the frame
    • Mark mounting point with a marker or punch
    • Drill a pilot hole
    • Enlarge to 23/64" for Rivnut
    • Spray paint hole for rust protection
    • Once dry, install Rivnut
    • Loosely thread bolt with washer through support arm into Rivnut
    • Apply bolts from step bracket pointing down
    • Use a 5/32" allen to tighten all bolts
  • Attach Step
    • Use 3/8" bolts to attach sides
    • 5/16" for rear mounting point
