How to Install the Owl Sherpa (Passenger Side)

How to install the Owl Sherpa on VS30 Sprinter vans like the Revel. 

 

Introduction

This tutorial provides a detailed, step-by-step guide for installing the Owl Sherpa Cargo system specifically designed for VS30 2019 Sprinter Vans and 2020 Revels. The Sherpa system enhances your van's storage capabilities, making it perfect for adventures and daily use. Follow these instructions to ensure a successful installation.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before starting the installation, ensure you have all necessary tools and materials ready. This will streamline the process and minimize interruptions.

  • Tools needed
      • 9/16" socket
      • 7/32" allen
      • Drill with bits
      • Level
      • Measuring tape

Step 2: Prepare the Installation Area

Creating a clean and organized workspace is essential for an effective installation.

  • Clear out the rear of the Sprinter van.
  • Lay down protective padding to prevent scratches.
  • Ensure ample lighting to see all components clearly.

Step 3: Attach the Hinge Brackets

  • Use black bolts, washers, and black nylock nuts to attach the hinge brackets to the Sherpa plate. The bolt head is on the outside of the Sherpa. TIghten snug, but not final tight yet. 
  • Shorter bracket will be on the top hinge heading "downhill" and the larger bracket will be on the bottom hinge

Step 4: Mount the Bracket Plates onto the Van Hinges

  • Locate the Owl Eyes bracket, the smaller 2-hole bracket, and the 1.25" bolts. 
  • The bracket holes will point towards the main van body. Put the bolts from inside the van, through the bracket, and then through the hinge. 

Step 5: Remove the Interior Van Trim Pieces

  • Pull out on the interior van plastic trim to pop out the clips from the panel on the back door. Then, rotate the panel to remove it from around the handle latch. 
  • Secure the frame to the brackets using bolts provided in the kit.

Step 6: Align Bushing and Drill Door Panel

  • Identify the hole near the top of the rack that is not aligned with the others. The bushing will be behind this hole. 
  • Drill through the hole, through the bushing, and into the door. The hole will be 3.5" down from the window. 
  • Use a Rust Reformer to cover the bare metal of the hole. 
  • Use anti-sieze on the bushing bolt. Once the bolt is through the door panel, mount the washer, then the nut and tighten until firm, do not squeeze/over-compress the bushing. 

Step 7: Final Checks

Before finishing up, conduct a thorough check of the installation.

  • Inspect all bolts and screws to ensure they are tight.
  • Verify that the Sherpa system is securely attached and stable.
  • Check for any obstructions or loose components.
