How to Install the Owl B2 Pro and B2 Classic

How to install the Owl Sprinter B2 Pro and B2 Classic on your Sprinter Van

Introduction

This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Owl Sprinter B2 Pro and B2 Classic carriers on your Mercedes Sprinter van. The B2 PRO is designed for enhanced strength, versatility, and functionality, making it a perfect choice for adventures that require robust cargo solutions. Requires 180 degree hinges.

Step 1: Gather Required Tools and Materials

Before beginning the installation, ensure you have the following tools and materials ready:

  • Owl B2 PRO carrier and hardware
  • Drill with a suitable bit
  • 9/16 wrench
  • 7/32 allen key and extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flathead screw driver
  • Alcohol/cleaning spray for adhesive mount
  • Painter's tape
  • Rust Reformer spray paint
  • Safety gear (gloves, goggles)

Step 2: Prepare the Installation Area

  • Clean the Door Area: Make sure the area around the door where the carrier will be mounted is clean from dirt and debris.
  • Check for Obstructions: Ensure there are no wires, cables, or other obstructions behind the door panel that might interfere with the installation.

Step 3: Align the Mounting Plate:

  • Use painter's tape to align the plate:  mark 10" away from the center door seam. Align the plate with the rolled edge of aluminum underneath the rear glass.
  • Ensure the hole is in the bottom half of the mounting plate. Remove the adhesive backing and firmly press the mount onto the exterior van panel.

Step 4: Mark and Drill the Hole

  • Remove the rear door interior panel: From the exterior, carefully and slowly pop out the exterior of the panel. Then, rotate it counter clockwise around the handle to fully remove the panel.
  • Remove the handle: use a flathead screwdriver to press the detent on the top and bottom. Let the handle hang loose. Take any extra clips from the door and put them back into the panel.
  • Optional: glue interior aluminum panels for improved strength.
  • Drill the Hole: Carefully drill a single hole through the door using the appropriate drill bit. Tape off the hole area and use rust-proofing spray and let dry.

Step 5: Install the Hardware

  • Hinge Plates: The Owl Eyes bracket goes on the upper hinge. Insert the bolts and let hang. The lower bracket has the holes towards the van interior, insert hardware and let hang.
  • Secure with Hardware: Holding the B2 in place, tighten hardware with washer then nylock nut.
  • Insert the 2.25" Bushing: Place the bushing between the rack and the plate. Place one washer on the bolt and one washer between the bushing and the plate. Place another washer on the inside of the van over the bolt then add the nut.
  • Tighten the Hardware: First, tighten the bushing bolt - do not bulge the bushing. Next, tighten the hinge bolts, approximately 25 ft-lbs.

Step 7: Test the Installation

  • Check Stability: Once installed, gently shake the carrier to ensure it is securely mounted.
  • Reinstall Interior Panels: put insulation back into places. Pass handle through interior panel and press panel into place. Then, clib handle back into place.
